I began my journey with A Course in Miracles alongside an inspiring group of souls from the "Book of Ethan." The Book of Ethan is a book club on a social audio app called clubhouse. Let me shout out the book of Ethan, because as I write this, I reflect on all the books we've read in the past years!!! It was thanks to our brother Waasi's encouragement and wisdom that we ventured into A Course in Miracles. For months, we read, reflected, and grew, drawing not only from the book’s teachings but also from the remarkable bond we shared as seekers. As I immersed myself in A Course in Miracles, I noticed references to its teachings in other spiritual works I was studying. I saw how its lessons aligned with universal principles of love, forgiveness, and peace.
Due to these connections, I felt drawn to share my journey with others who may be curious or new to the course.
What Is A Course in Miracles?
A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a spiritual self-study program that offers a structured path to inner peace and spiritual transformation. Created in the 1970s, this text was channeled by Helen Schucman, who described its content as the voice of Jesus guiding her to help others experience a shift from fear to love. The course is organized into three parts:
The Text – a deep exploration of spiritual concepts.
The Workbook for Students – 365 daily lessons, each designed to be practiced over the course of a year.
The Manual for Teachers – guidance for those who feel called to share the course’s principles with others.
Key Principles of A Course in Miracles
Though the teachings can initially seem complex, they center on a few core ideas that resonate universally:
Forgiveness as the Path to Inner Peace In ACIM, forgiveness is not about excusing actions or overlooking mistakes; it’s about releasing ourselves from the resentment and judgments we hold. True forgiveness, according to the course, frees us to see others—and ourselves-without past grievances.
Choosing Love Over Fear The course teaches that all emotions boil down to two roots: love and fear. Love is the experience of unity, peace, and understanding, while fear leads to separation, conflict, and suffering. ACIM invites us to consciously choose love over fear in our thoughts, actions, and relationships.
Miracles as Shifts in Perception In the course, miracles are defined as shifts in perception that allow us to move from fear to love. Rather than supernatural events, miracles are seen as moments of grace that help us see people and situations in a new, compassionate light. Each choice to forgive, to understand, or to release fear is a small miracle in itself.
Practical Examples of Lessons from A Course in Miracles
To understand how the teachings of ACIM come to life, let’s explore a few examples from the Workbook for Students. These daily lessons are short but impactful, gradually guiding practitioners to see the world through a more loving, forgiving perspective.
Lesson 1: "Nothing I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] means anything."
This first lesson introduces the idea that the meanings we attach to things are based on personal associations rather than universal truths. By practicing this lesson, we start to question our perceptions and open ourselves to seeing things as they are, without the baggage of past judgments. For beginners, it’s a foundational step in learning to let go of the fear-based perceptions that create barriers to inner peace.
For instance, if you look at a chair and think, “This is my favorite reading chair,” you’ve attached personal meaning to it. But this lesson asks you to observe the chair without judgment, freeing it from any emotional or mental labels. By practicing this neutrality, you learn to see beyond superficial meanings and become open to a broader, more accepting view of the world.
Lesson 27: "Above all else I want to see."
This lesson is about setting an intention to see the world differently—not through physical eyes, but through a vision that reveals love and unity. Here, “seeing” refers to a deeper understanding that moves beyond our usual limited perspectives. ACIM teaches that what we “see” in life is influenced by the thoughts we hold, and by choosing to prioritize true vision, we align ourselves with a desire to experience peace.
For instance, if you are facing a conflict with a friend, practicing this lesson may help you look past the immediate argument to see the love, forgiveness, and understanding that can mend the situation. The emphasis on “seeing” reminds us that true vision involves perceiving through the heart, seeing beyond surface-level judgments to the core of love and compassion in all things.
Lesson 34: "I could see peace instead of this."
This lesson teaches that in any situation where we feel troubled, we can choose to see peace instead. It’s an empowering reminder that our experience of the world is shaped by the choices we make within. Practicing this lesson encourages us to take responsibility for our perspective, offering us a way to move from stress or anxiety to peace.
Imagine you’re in a stressful situation at work—tight deadlines, rising tension, and frayed tempers. In this moment, ACIM suggests you pause, remember this lesson, and think, “I could see peace instead of this.” Even if the outer circumstances don’t change, this shift allows you to bring calmness into the situation. You may still need to handle tasks and manage deadlines, but with an inner sense of peace, you’re less likely to react with fear or frustration.
Starting Your Journey with A Course in Miracles
For beginners, diving into A Course in Miracles may feel like stepping into unknown territory. Its ideas can challenge the way we’ve been conditioned to think, but approaching it with patience and openness makes the journey rewarding. Here are some tips to make the most of your practice:
Be Patient with the Process The course is designed to be a gradual, transformative journey. Concepts that may seem puzzling or contradictory at first often reveal deeper meaning over time. Don’t rush; let each lesson and insight unfold in its own time.
Use Meditation and Reflection Reflecting on each lesson and spending time in quiet meditation helps internalize the teachings. By creating space to be still, you open yourself to the experience of peace and gain clarity on how to apply the course’s teachings in your daily life.
Connect with a Study Group Just as I found with the Book of Ethan group, having a community to discuss and reflect with can bring new depth to your understanding. Different perspectives can help clarify concepts, and the shared journey is often a source of encouragement and inspiration.
Let Go of the Need for Perfection The course is a guide, not a rigid rulebook. It’s natural to make mistakes or misunderstand certain teachings. Forgiving yourself is part of the practice, and with time, you’ll find that even the challenges become valuable lessons.
The Power of A Course in Miracles
A Course in Miracles is not just a spiritual text; it’s a powerful journey that invites us to experience life through a lens of compassion and forgiveness. By choosing to release judgments, see the world with clarity, and practice forgiveness, we start to transform our interactions, our thoughts, and ultimately, our experience of the world. Each lesson, each practice, and each moment spent reflecting on its teachings brings us closer to a lasting sense of peace.
I can actually say seeing how this course has played out in my life the past months, and even if I missed a lesson. I know that A Course In Miracles Has Brought Me Closer to God!
